THE 15th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) opened Saturday night in a bumpy visual feast with an internationally famed star-studded red carpet show.
More than 400 world-renowned directors, actors and actresses walked the red carpet, including Hollywood actor Aaron Eckhart, South Korean actor Jang Dong-gun and actress Han Chae-young, and Japanese actresses Ryoko Kirosue and Takako Tokiwa. Compared to an Eastern Oscar night, the grandeur of Saturday night surpassed the previous scene in Beijing Film Festival.
French film director Jean Jacques Annaud (“The Bear,” “Seven Years in Tibet,” “Enemies at the Gates”) leads this year’s panel of judges, including Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, Iranian director and screenwriter Rakhshan Banietemad, American actress Heather Graham and several leading figures in the film instry.
This year’s SIFF lasts nine days until June 24, with 1,643 films from 106 countries and regions competing for the Golden Goblet Awards, the main competition section of the festival. There will be a high number of films having their world or Asia premieres, with over 28 cinemas in Shanghai set to participate.
SIFF always takes the responsibility to discover and support new Asian filmmakers. Founded in 1993, SIFF is China’s only A-category international film festival accredited by the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Procers Associations).
