《雲水謠》繁多地借用和挪移已在的表情穩定的歌舞形態來構建愛情場址的聲音氛圍，對受眾進行熟悉而陌生的心靈和情感沖擊。影片開始，義大利17世紀作曲家維瓦爾第代表作《四季》之《冬》的旋律撲面而來，然後，用影像介紹台北城市生活存在時傳統閩南戲、台灣布袋戲等民間音樂貫穿在依次閃過的民俗造型之間，而美國導演朱利恩·杜維威爾1938年出品的音樂傳記片《翠堤春曉》主題曲《when we were young當我們還年輕》（奧地利作曲家施特勞斯作曲、漢默斯頓填詞）成為陳秋水與王碧雲的愛情的融合點和主旋律。陳秋水與王金娣之間的愛情音樂背景開始雜錦式的本土化，如快板、京劇著名劇目《蘇三起解》、秧歌舞、結婚時藏語演唱的載歌載舞的革命歌曲《洗衣歌》（李俊琛詞，羅念一曲，1964年首演），到雪崩時佛教音樂悲愴的撕心裂肺的女音《大悲咒》出現時，後現代對現存文本兼容並蓄的互文姿態到達頂點。電影中所有的音樂歌舞「插片」使用得非常恰當和煽情，雖然缺乏原創的恆永流傳的愛情音律，可是符合後現代文化消費的復制本性。

其中的第二樂章非常出名，曾被改編為輕音樂而廣為流傳。
第一樂章（不太快的快板）描繪冬天的難以抵禦的嚴寒：「北風凜凜，白雪皚皚，冰天雪地，戰栗不止，頓足奔跑路途艱，牙齒格格直打顫。」
第二樂章（廣板）則屋外下著凍雨，屋內人圍坐在火爐邊，品嘗熱酒，感受溫暖安寧的浪漫氣氛。此情此景與戶外冰天雪地對比鮮明，更顯醉人。
第三樂章（快板），則著重刻畫一個滑冰的場景：「冰上溜，慢慢行，謹防滑倒要小心，忽然急轉而摔倒，爬起身來又急跑，不料滑到冰窟邊。」 返回屋內後，再聆聽戶外「風神們的開戰」。
