參加過很多朋友婚禮的埃迪·坎特羅(本·斯蒂勒飾)如今已然到了男大當婚的年紀。然而，優柔寡斷的他始終無法判斷什麼樣的女人適合自己，多年的社會闖盪依然令自己無法為自己的另一半定位。但在傻小子埃迪的心中卻始終對「一見鍾情」充滿了信心，深信在不遠的將來能遇到自己的心上人且一舉終成眷屬。
此時，外表看上去陽光、性感、活潑、可愛的麗拉(馬琳·阿克曼飾)及時地出現在了埃迪的面前。經過了一周「精彩、浪漫」的約會之後，兩人迅速地進入了「戀愛甜蜜期」。於是，兩人迅速完婚，並開心的開車和新娘去蜜月旅行。然而，令埃迪萬萬沒有想到的是，他的愛情噩夢才剛剛開始。不但經常在他開車時搗亂，拿奶油、汽水射他，上廁所時必定要放極響的臭屁、而且做愛時一定要打人才有快感。弄得新郎官苦不堪言……
就在埃迪感覺自己的下半生將暗無天日時，他又遇到了一個「夢中女孩」——米蘭達(米歇爾·莫納漢飾)。純真可愛的米蘭達的出現讓埃迪意識到，自己的幸福可能才剛剛開始。於是那輛幸福的小車繼續上路，只是副駕駛座上已經換成了另一個漂亮善良的女人，天知道埃迪在開到這條公路的盡頭前能不能找到真正的幸福人生……
